COLONIAL GOVERNORS.
The Governor of Queensland, the Marquis of Normanby, has acknowledged the increase of his salary by the Parliament from .£4OOO per annum to £OOOO per annum in the following address to the Assembly : —“ The Governor avails himself of this opportunity to convey to the Assembly his acknowledgment for the liberal provision which it is proposed to make for the office which ho has now the honor to hold. This provision will have the effect of raising the Government of Queensland into the position of a first-class Government, and of placing it, as regards the salary of the Governor, on a par with that of South Australia —a position which, considering the wonderful increase which has taken place in the population, in the revenue, and iu the material wealth and prosperity of the country during the last few years, it is well entitled to assume. It will, at the same time, enable the Governor to exercise in a manner more befitting the greatly increased importance of this Colony than would otherwise be possible that hospitality which is incumbent upon him as the representative of the Crown in this portion of her Majesty’s dominions.” Sir Hercules Robinson decided upon not giving the usual ball at Sydney on the anniversary of the Queen’s birthday. The Jlerahl writes :—“ We understand that the birth-day ball will not take place tills year. Having regard to the increasing population of tire Colony, and the large number of persons who every year aspire to share the hospitalities of Government House, it has been found impossible to provide the requisite accommodation. For tlie last two or three years invitations have been issued to 1200 and 1300 persons, but the suite of rooms at Government House is really nut large enough for an assemblage of (>OO persons. Instead of the ball, his Excellency has determined to give a good English dinner of roast beef and plum pudding to the inmates of the Benevolent Asylums at Sydney, Liverpool, Parramatta, and Windsor.”
