ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE. To the Editor of the New Zealand Spectator. November 7, 1854.
Sir, — As I observe that a correspondent in Saturday's Spectator, under the signature of " An Old Butcher, " recommends the foot of Mount Victoria as an eligible spot for establishing slaughter houses, I hope you will allow me to express my strong dissent from this opinion, and to explain that thespot he alludes to is in the form of a basin, without any outlet, or means of drainage to the Bay 7 so that, as * natural consequence, during the summer for want of proper drainage diseases of all kinds would be engendered, and the health of the inhabitants of Wellington would be seriously affected if his suggestions were adopted. The best site would be one sufficiently removed from the most populous part of the town, and with good drainage. Why should the butchers of Wellington complain at being placed on the same footing with those at Auckland, where the slaughter-houses are two miles distant from thetown ? Talking of nuisances if you would but take a stroll, Mr. Editor.ontheeasternsideof the bay, towards Castle Doleful, you would find an accumulation of horrors perfectly sickening. The carcase of the dead whale, carcases of cattle and horses that have drifted ashore, line the beach and are putrifying in the sun. Presently typhus or some infectious fever will break out, when every one will ask his neighbour when the mischief is done — who is to blame ? Why are these things not cared for ? Why is not the law properly carried out ? Where are the police, and of what use are they, if they do not see that nuisances are removed or prevented ? We have a medical man for a Superintendent, surely we might expect that he at least would pay some attention to the sanitary state of the town- Our Provincial Secretary, before he threw physic to the dogs, tried to get his living by it ; — what is he about, that these carcases are allowed to infect the air ? Do remind the Provincial Executive that the health of the town is not beneath their care, and oblige your obedient servant LEGION.
