ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

To tlie Editor of the ficw Zealand Spectator. Wellington,. August 18, 1854. Sir, — The hard style of the leading article in last Wednesday's Independent points out the author as plainly as if he had appended his brush to it. Beware the fox 1 He labours, vainly I should believe, to persuade his readers against the evidence of their senses on one point, namely, that there' aru little or no means of communication between the t several settlements, just at the very time when' steamers have been established. He then cites Sir George Grey's Provincial Councils Ordinance, and a portion of Sir George's statements relating thereto, in support of- his no-communication argument. A most important portion of Sir George's statement, however, is left out. where he shews that so soon as means of communication with distant points arc established, the Provincial' Councils will be gradually absorbed by the. General Government, and merely municipal bodies will be substituted for them. So much for his fairness ! But could fairness or consistency be expected from a man who, urn the. appearance of the said Provincial Councils Ordinance some years ago, called it in the columns of the Independent the consummation of the People's' hopes, and after an interview with Mr. Godley denounced it, in the next number but one of the same Independent, as the insidious contrivance of a tyrant. I am, Sir, yours obediently, HAHKBACK.
