To the Electors of Wellington.
Gentmsmhn, |>y nn Act passed in the late Session -^ of Ihe Provincial Council, it is declared that any one who shall undertake or hold a contract for the Public Service of the Province, Miall thereafter be incompetent to sit or vote as a Member of such Council. Having for many years, in the regular course of my business, been accustomed to tender for certain supplies for the Public Service, I, in answer to advertisement in the Government Gazette of 9lh ult., tendered as usual. The tenders have been accepted, and I am consequently disqualified from sitting as a Member of the Piovinrial Council. Doubtless you will be duly informed of this fact by the issue of a Writ calling for the E'ection of a new Member, as provided by the Act ; but I deem it not the less my duty to make this announcement to the Electors, more particularly to those by whose votes I was so honorably elected. And if, amongst those who so honored me, there be any who think I should so far forego my own interest as to give up a portion of my private business rather than a portion of my public duty, to such F would say, that while I ever have bee"n, and I hope ever mnv be, ready to devote whatever time or talent I have to my duty as a citizen, without aiming at place, or asking for pay, I hold firmly to the principle that I have no right to be called upon to make any pecuniary sacrifice in doing so. Sincerely thanking you for the honorable position you have permitted me to occupy, — reflecting with pride on the part which that position enabled me to take in the establishment of Responsible Government in this Province, and regretting that I have not been tenfold more able in the Public Service, I am, Gentlemen, Your faithful Servant; GEOIIGE MOORE. July 5, 1854.
