VAN DIEMEN'S LAND. [From the Empire, May 9.]

We are in receipt of news from Van Diemen's Land to the-t}7th ultimo. In the Legislative Council, on the 20th, a motion that the expenses of the passage money of the Highland immigrants by the ship Sir Allan M'Nab, should be paid to the Highland Society, was passed and adopted. A resolution

was also passed approving of tbe regulations issued by the Government relative to immigration, and a sum of £50,000 was appropriated for the carrying out of these measures. The Assisted Immigrants Bill was read a second time, and ordered to be referred to a select committee. Several petitions had been presented, praying for Municipal Reform. Mr. Gregson gave notice of motion for a committee of enquiry into the management of the police, and for a committee of enquiry into Major Cottons petition (Trinity Parish.) Mr. Gleadow gave notice of motion for a committee to consider that part of his Excellency's speech which j referred to the increase of drunkenness. A report of committee was broug-ht up, recommending that £2000 should be placed at the disposal of intending exhibitors at the Paris Exhibition. A Bill was brought in for regulating slaughter houses in Launceston. The Bonded Warehouses Bill passed through committee, was reported and ordered to be read a thiru time the following day. The report of a committee on Government salaries, recommending an increase of £25 per cent., was adopted. It was resolved that the increase on Government salaries should extend to the case of the Governor. The Colonial Times publishes a list of deat h in Hobart Town for the quarter ending 31st March, 1554, showing a total of 412, or 3£ per day. In Launceston district, the deaths registered in the quarter ending September, 1853, were 10S ; December, 1853,90; and March, 1854, 182 — or about three per day.
