To the Editor of the New Zealand Spectator. Wellington, 20th January, 1854.
Sir, — More than a month has elapsed since the Estimates were voted in Council, upon which occasion the most conscientious Provincial Secretary called the attention of the Council to the item of £150 that appeared in those Estimates, for the salary of Clerk to the Treasury, by observing that the gentleman who held the office hitherto, had resigned, but that he requested the Council to vote that sum, as it was the intention of the Government to appoint a successor to the late clerk. Will you have the goodness to inform the public through your valuable paper, whether that vacancy is to be filled up, or whether the Provincial Scretary's laborious occupations, will enable him to perform the duties of both Provincial Secretary*, and those or Clerk to the Treasury, thereby giving him an opportunity of receiving both' salaries ? I am, Sir, Your obedient servant, ARGUS
