Captaia Godfrey, of circle-sailing celebrity, has not maintained his former fame, but the good ship Statesman, nevertheless, has made a very fair passage of eighty-eight days from Southampton, and eighty-one from the Land's End. By her we have London papers of the 9th of July, being one day later than those brought by the Shanghai. The following bulletin of the health of Prince Albert was issued yesterday :—: — Buckingham Palace, Friday, July 8. His Royal Highness Prince Albert ha 9 an attack of measles. The eruption has come fully out, and the disease is proceeding favorably. JAMES CLARK, M.D.
The Irish Elections. — By the magnetic telegraph from Mullingar the public have this morning been put in possession of the result of the Sligo contest, which terminated yesterday evening, after an uaprecedentedly hard-fought battle, in the return of Mr. John Sadleir by a na'row majority of four votes. The majority would, it is said, have been much more decisive if the matter had been left in the hands of the people, and the Roman Catholic clergy had abstained from all interference. The conduct of such of the reverend body as did not disdain to act as agents for Mr. Somers, has caused great surprise, people being under the impression that the whole weight of the " spiritual influence " would on this occasion have been exercised to ensure the defeat of " Lord Palmerston's nominee."
