The Irish Elections. — By the magnetic telegraph from Mullingar the public have this morning been put in possession of the result of the Sligo contest, which terminated yesterday evening, after an uaprecedentedly hard-fought battle, in the return of Mr. John Sadleir by a na'row majority of four votes. The majority would, it is said, have been much more decisive if the matter had been left in the hands of the people, and the Roman Catholic clergy had abstained from all interference. The conduct of such of the reverend body as did not disdain to act as agents for Mr. Somers, has caused great surprise, people being under the impression that the whole weight of the " spiritual influence " would on this occasion have been exercised to ensure the defeat of " Lord Palmerston's nominee."
