NELSON.
We learn by a private letter from Nelsnn that a fund has been raised, partly by private subscription and partly by a Government grant, for opening up the route from Nelson towards Canterbury as far as the Fairfield Downs at the head of the Awatere ; and that Mr. Alfred Dobson has returned to Nelson after making a careful examination of the proposed route for the purpose of reporting the> same to the Government. By the Necromancer, we have received the Nelson Examiner to the 30th July. As here, a great portion of its columns are devoted to the addresses of candidates. The nomination of members for the town in the General
Assembly took place on the 24th, when Mr. Travers and Mr. Mackay were elected without opposition. "We understand that Mr. Stafford had been elected Superintendent, but we have not seen a statement of the Poll. The other elections had not taken place. A melancholy accident had occurred on the Awatere, by which Mr. G. Kemp, a well-known and respectable shepherd lost his life. It is supposed he was thrown from his dray, one of the wheels rf which passed over his leg; from which injury he died a few days after. —Lytlelton Tines, Aug. 20.
Markets. —AH kinds of produce still continue in demand, and bring high prices. Wheat mny be quoted at Bs. per bushel, oats, 7s. 6d.; flour £22 per ton. There has been a great demand for potatoes for shipment, which have sold at £8 a ton. Sawn timber is in request at 20s. per 100 feet. The price of butcher's meat h-is also risen greatly, and is now selling at from 7d. to Bd. per lb. —Nelson Examiner, July 30.
