CALIFORNIA. [From the Maitland Mercury.]

We are in receipt of California files to the 16th May. Mining prospects continued good. From an extract given below it will be seen that the disputes arising out of squatting claims continued to lead to sjrae desperate affrays. Excitement ani> Bsadl? Affray in Santa Bahbaha. —By the arrival of the steamer Or.io, Captain Brigg3, from the southern porta, we b.3VG dates from Los Angeles, San Diago, and Santa Barbara, several days later, I('rora San Diego to the 23rd ult., Los Angeles GCtb. The following painful intelligence comes to us from Santa Barbara : —For some time past tbo ranch known as the Arroyo Burro has been in possession of one John Powers, vrno held it under a squatter claim. On Saturday last the Sheriff, W. W. Twist, was about to proceed to serve a writ cf ejectment on Powers. It being intimated to him that to get possession be must do so by fores of arms, be called upon the citizens tc meet him in the Plasa to render him assistance in tho execution of bis duty. The party procured a large cannon to take with them/ and while ou the Plaza a man through hit riata over it to draw it away. The Sheriff ordered him to desiot; during the dispute a Californian stept behind Twist and stabbed him ; the latter turned round and shot him dead. A general firing then commenced, during which J. A. Videl wa3 killed. —Monday Morning: The excitement has somewhat subsided on'account of the arrival of the cutter Ewing, whose comraender offers to render all assistance in his his power in the execution of ths law, At last accounts Twist was rery low, but hopes were entertained of his recovery. —Alta California, May 16.

Recal of the Japan Expedition.—Japan is still to remain a scaled book, after all. The squadron is to be recalled, Commodore Perry is to be taken out of his element, and hauled up on the dry deck. We are to have do port in Japan for a steamer depot, no further knowledge of its people, no treaties of peace and good will, no protection for our wrecked seamen, no harbours for our Arctic whalers, nothing hue stripes and prisons, and death by starvation bastinado and poison, for the poor sailor whom storm and tempests hurl upon those chartless and unsarreyed shores. All our boasting about opening Japan is to prove only boast and gas, our ships are to return to rot, and the nation is to become the jeertarget for all civilization.—Alta California, May 16.
