HUTT ELECTION.
On Saturday last the polling commenced at nine o'clock with great spirit ; indeed, so rapidly were the votes tendered and recorded that a sufficient number of voters polled by eleven o'clock to enable every body to anticipate with certainty the final result. Before half past one o'clock nearly all the voters had polled, and at four o'clock the numbers were declared as follows :—: — Renall 170 Ludlam 168 Wakefield 108 G. Hart 158 S Mason 51 Daniell . 39 Sellar 37 The four first were then declared duly elected by the Returning Officer. Mr. Renall, being the first on ,the poll, briefly addressed the electors. He said that it was difficult to express what he felt from having been placed in the proud position in which he then stood. He thanked Ms brother electors most sincerely for the expression of their opinion in his favour, which was the more flattering to him as it must have resulted from their unbiassed feelings. (Cheers.) He assured them that he would do all in his power to merit the distinguished honor conferred upon him, by strict attention to his duties during every moment of the time he should be their representative. (Cheers.) Mr. Ludlam sincerely thanked the electors for the honor done to him. He had been returned by their unsolicited suffrages, for he had not asked for a single vote. (Cheers.) He had entirely relied upon his character as displayed during a long residence amongst them, (Cheers.) He had always pursued the same straightforward course, never basely truckling to any man, or set of men, but maintaining his own principles in the open, face of day. (Cheers.) This course had met with its reward at their hands, for which he thanked them, and he would always pursue it as their representative. (Cheers.) Mr. E. G. Wakefield said that he -was as much at a loss for Words to thank the electors for the manner in Which they had behaved as his friend Mr. Trotter had been in seconding his (Mr. W's.) nomination the day before. (Cheers.) His heart was full of gratitude for the expression of opinion in his favour. For this expression he had two sets of persons to thank ; first the electors who had voted for him, whom he most sincerely thanked ; secondly, those who had attacked him by making all kinds of false and base charges against him, for he felt sure that these attacks had procured him many supporters. (Great cheering ) He begged especially to thank Capt. Daniell and Mr. Fitzherbert for their kind assistance. (Laughter and cheering.) There was one thing remarkable in this election which was, that a working man had been placed at the head of the poll. . This was a real distinction. There was no humbug in it. There could be no mistake about it. A gentleman talked the other day of " his affection for the working men," clasping his hands and pretending to be quite overcome. This was in Wellington : but at the Hutt people acted instead of talking. r They shewed what they thought of the working" class, by sending one of them to the Council with all the honor they could. (Cheers.) Mr. G. Hart begged to thank the electors most cordially. They had returned him because they believed that he really represented their opinions and would assiduously look after their interests. (Cheers.) They might rest as sured that he would always do so, and the moment any doubt arose on the point he would remove it or resign his trust into their hands. .(Great cheering.)
