SOUTH AUSTRALIA. [From the Melbourne Morning Herald.]
We have received files of the Adelaide papers to the 18>h May. The Register states that the city surveyor had lately suggested to the Corporation the expediency of commencing, without delay, the works necessary to the construction of a durable bridge between the northern and southern divisions of the South Australian metropolis. It is understood that Mr. Perryman does not contemplate a total expenditure exceeding £12,000 for the construction of a durable bridge, which would not only be an ornament to the city, and an invaluable public accommodation, but serve to indicate, unmistakenbly where the upper terminus of the Adelaide City and Port Railway ought to be. Ihe weekly Government land sale, last week, comprised 4825 acres, which lold at an average of £1 10s. lOfd. per acre. The parties concerned in the fatal affray at Fort Adelaide, by which George Arnold met his death, in February list, were put upon their trial for wilful murder on the 14th inst., and acquitted, nnder the direction of the judge. The Gazette publishes the usual return of land selected by private contract during the month of April, the quantity being 6668 acres, and the amount received £6722 13s. The overland gold escort, last arrived, only brought 5600 ounces of gold. The shipments of gold by the Orpheus, for England, amounted to 3292 ounces 9dwts.
