ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE. To the Editor of the New Zealand Spectator. Wellington, 17th June, 1853.

Sir, — In your last paper there appears a letter profestingto be written by "A Canterbury Seftlfr," and dated " Port Cooper, 3rd June, 1853.'-'. The writer professes to have read Mr. Wakefield's letter to the Duke of Newcastle, which was first published in the Wellington Independent, of the 25th May. Now the last vessel from this Port to Lyttelton was the Kaka, which sailed on the 22nd May, three days before the publication of the letier to tbe Duke of Newcastle. There bas been_no other opportunity of communication from this place to Canterbury, and Mr. Wake-

field's letter will' probably be entirely unknown there until the arrival of the Wellington, now on the point of sailing. Consfquenlly it seems impossible but that your correspondent has addressed you in a false character. Ido not enter into his objects, but the probability is that they ,are not more creditable than the means which he has employed to accomplish them. I remain, Sir, a real Canterbury Settler, And your obedient servan', CHAS. O. TORLESSE.
