Last Thursday's Government Gazette contains two most important Proclamations, one de■claring the number of members to be returned by the six Provinces now established, to the House of Kepresentatives; the number of members of the different Provincial Councils, and the other details connected with the elections under^the New Constitution. The other Proclamation-brings the new Land Eegulations into immediate operation. "We have published in this day's Spectator the Proclamation referring to the elections, and will publish in our next number the new Land Regulations.,. '
\", * "ft- ♦ * • . His Excellency Sir George Grey left Wellington on Thursday on an overland journey to Auckland by way of Ahuriri and the East Coast We understand the chief object of Sir G. Grey's overland journey is to arrange with the Native tribes along the East Coast on the route to Auckland, (in conjunction with \ the Bishop of New Zealand who left Wellington last week) the setting apart of portions of lands in their respective districts as endowments for Industrial Schools for the education of Maori children.
An adjourned sittings of the Supreme Court was held yesterday for the trial of the natire charged with the late robhery and outrages at Rangitikei, when the trial was postponed for three weeks in order to give time for the arrival of witnesses.
