NEW ZEALAND SPECTATOR AND Cook's Strait Guardian. Saturday, January 8, 1853.
The arrival of the Sydney Mail per Come*,] which was brought on yesterday from Nelson] by the Necromancer, has put us in possession of English news to the 24th September. The most important event is the death of the greatest Hero of Modern Times, and who has done more than any other man to maintain and advance the honor and interests of his country, the Duke of Wellington, who expired at Walmer Castle, on the 14th September, in the eighty-fourth year of his age. Such an announcement cannot fail to be received with profound interest by every British subject. We have endeavoured, as far as our arrangements would permit, to give in our present number the principal items of English news received by this opportunity. Flour had fallen considerably in price in the Australian Colonies in consequence of recent large importations ; it is to be hoped that a great reduction will take plajse here also in the extravagant price which has for some time past been maintained in the price of flour and bread, and which has been sensibly felt by persons with limited means, particularly by working men with large families.
