CAPE OF GOOD HOPE.
Gallant and Successful Affair. — The following is an extract from the Graham's Town Journal of the Ist of May, giving an account of the Kafir war. Capr. Hamley, whose gallantry is therein recorded, is a son of Mr. Joseph Hamley, of Bodmin, Cornwall. •• An account has been, received to-day of a clever, gallant, and successful affair with the enemy, by a detachment of the 12th Regiment now stationed at Governor's Kop and immediate neighbourhood. From the account before us, we glean the following particulars : — On Wednesday last, a detachment of 50 men of the 12th, under Captain Hamley, being out on patrol in the Fish River Bush, got on the spore of about forty Kafirs coming into the Colony. This was at once followed, the trail leading towards thg " Spits Kop," a well known conical Hill covered with bush amidst the Fish River jungle. Judging^thut the marauders would not venture out of cover into the open country until the close of the day, the gallant 12th moved briskly forward, and when about a quarter of a mile from " Spit's Kop," fell in with the enemy, and got close up to them before they were perceived. " The moment the marauders were aware of the presence of the patrol, they faced about, fired a volley, and then plunged into the thick bush, where, however, the patrol succeeded in killing six, and wounding, as appeared from the " blood spores," many others. The skirmish lasted for about half an hour, and it being then nearly dark, with about two miles of bush country to scramble through, it was deemed expedient to get out of the scrub favoured by daylight, the men having marched since dawn, a distance of nearly thirty miles, and that through a rugged and bushy country."
