BALANCE SHEET BROM 6th OCTOBER, 1851, To 30th September, 1852.
Audited and found correct Robert Lambert, ~| William Seed, V Auditors. B. Gordon ' J Wellington, October 29, 1852. WILLIAM ALLEN, .Manager. After some discussion on the legal charges as regarded mortgage and transfer which, in the opinion of some of the memhers, " were heavy and excessive, the following • resolution, moved by Mr. W. Seed, seconded by Mr. John[M'Beth was- passed. That the Committee be requested to take measures for ascertaining whether the Society cannot use printed forms for future mortgages, as considerable saving would thereby be effected for those members who realized their shares." The chairman observed that before the meeting closed, it would be as well perhaps to appoint, or he might say, reappoint the same auditors for the ensuing year. He thought that the confidence of the members was securely placed in the gentlemen at present holding that office. Messrs. Seed, Lambert, and Gordon were then unanimously reappointed Auditors for the ensuing year. A vote of thanks .to the Chairman having been moved and carried, the meeting separated.
We understand that the Committee appointed to promote the formation of a Company for working the Coal at Nelson are proceeding very favourably, and we hope soon to hear of a practical result of their labours. We would also beg to direct attention to the meeting to be held at the Athenaeum to- morrow evening, on the subject of the Dun Mountain Copper Mines, when Mr. Wrey, who has just returned from Nelson, will be present, to afford every information.
On Sunday one of the heaviest floods occurred at the Hutt that has been experienced for several years, occasioned partly by the heavy rain on Saturday night, but chiefly it is believed to the melting of the snow on the Tararua. The waters rose so high that the bridge is reported to Lave sustained considerable injury, a portion of the west bank of the river below the bridge has also been washed away. We hope the early potato crop and the wheat will not have sustained any damage.
