Cook's Strait Mining Company.

-'FHE Projectors of this undertaking -*~ have received assurance from the Government of a lease of the Copper Mines recently' discovered near the Dun -Mountain. In the capacity of owners of this mineral district, they "propose ultimately to form a Company to work the same efficiently by means of a large capital, the amount of which cannot be expected in these settlements. v

Before the Projectors ask the Public to take * shares -in such-Company, they must be in a position to show that there are well-grounded expectations of their receiving proper remuneration. This can only be done by an actual opening of the mine to such an extent as will warrant the belief that such remuneration would ensue. It will also be necessary to survey the line of country from the mine to a place of shipment, so as to procure a proper outlet for

the produce of the mine. j^hese operations cannot be accomplished " without considerable expense, to meet which the Projectors propose to raise a Preliminary Fund by voluntary contributions on the part of ' the local public. The amount of this fund will be limited to £1,000. It is proposed to ex- ■ pend £500 only, in the first instance, in making all requisite surveys, mining operations, -&c, &c, to arrive at a true and complete knowledge of the inlrinsic value of the mine. In the possible contingency of the mine turning out a blank, the remaining £500 would be returned to the contributors in the ratio of their contributions ; but in case, as may fairly be expected, that a valuable mine does exist, then and in that case further expenses would become -necessary in' raising capital in England and elsewhere, and in obtaining the requisite assistance by importation of competent persons in sufficient numbers to carry on and work the mines successfully. ,

In the event of the above arrangement being -satisfactorily carried out, and the result should warrant the proceeding, a Company will be formed with a capital of £56,000, in £1 shares, fully ipaid up, to be conducted on the "Cost Book" principle, -whereby the liabilities are confined to the amount of subscription, and the necessity of any contract-deed is avoided. The contributors- to -the Preliminary- Fund will beentitled to three £1 shares in such Company when formed for 1 every £1 paid to the Preliminary Fund should they elect to become shareholders, which will be deemed to be conclusive

-only on their signing the Cost Book. As soon as £500 has been paid into the Banker's handsi ' the * requisite works will be

commenced, and a Committee of three shall be -elected by the contributors, two of whom shall form a - quorum, by whom all arrangements with the Projectors shall be conducted, and in Tvhose names' the money shall stand at the Banker's. - All contributions to the Preliminary Fund.must be paid in full at the time of application. % Mr: Wket's Report on this mineral district *-has long been before the public, and the Projectors are warranted in assuming that the conclusion arrived at in that Report has generally been acquiesced in. They feel justified in statingjhat such conclusion is fully confirmed by after consideration. ' " ' •' ' A> considerable proportion' of the Preliminary Fund has already been subscribed,- and 'if the 'residents of this settlement wish to promote

<its welfare, early attention is desirable. - - Applications to be made at the Cook's Strait •Mining- Company's Office, Trafalgar Street, •Nelson. ' ' ; .' On behalf of the Projectors, ' , "W. L.WREY, '..'■■- ' Mineral Surveyor. Nelson, - Octobers, 1852,
