NELSON. [From the Nelson Examiner, September 11.]
We are glad to learn, that full instructions have been issued for the leasing of mineral lands in the settlement, so that we shall hope ,now to see our coal fields worked with as little delay as pdssible, and measures taken to turn our. copper mines to account. Land Sales, which have been suspended since January last, are also to be resumed. " ' L
The Weather and Crops. — The weather during the past winter has been exceedingly favourable to agricultural operations. • The fall of rain has been very moderate, and the firmer has been able to prosecute his labours with but •little interruption. The young wheat looks •promising, and so far as present appearances go, lead us to expect that the heavy crops of last year will be repeated this season, In the garden and orchard the trees are looking well. Early pears are already in bloom, and plums and apples are fast hastening to give their promise of an abundance of fruit. Asparagus can now be obtained, and other spring vegetables are progressing fast to maturity. In consequence of the dry ness of Autumn, pasture during the winter has been scanty, but the young grass has shot up wonderfully within the last fortnight. ' Notwithstanding the earliness of the season, shearing we believe has commenced in the Wairau. Gold. — A rumour has been current during the last few days of gold having been found in Massacre Bay, but we believe the story has no foundation. If gold exists in New Zealand, there are few spots where a search for it could he made with better prospects of success than the country on both sides of our bay.
