NELSON. [From the Examiner.]

Fire. — On Tuesday last, the house of a person named "Winn, residing in Eighty- eight valley, accidentally took fire, and was destroyed, ■with the property it contained.

- Regular Communication with Wellington. — We understand that the agent of the brigantine Henrietta has tendered to convey the mails to and from Nelson and Wellington once every fortnight. This tender, if accepted, will be the first step ever made by the Government towards establishing a regular communication between any two settlements in the colony; and should the experiment be successful, the same arrangement may doubtless be extended to other settlements, and the maintenance of the Government brig be thus rendered no longer necessary. The small sum of £175 ayear, is all we believe that is required to give us a mail from Wellington once every fortnight ; and supposing that it should require £800 a-year as a bonus for two other vessels, one running 'from Wellington to Manakau, calling at New Plymouth, and the other to Otago, calling at Canterbury — thus, for half the cost of the brig, we should have a regular communication between all the principal settlements in the colony, and instead of intervals of four months and upwards occurring witheut hearing of each other, a second week would scarcely elapse withoufsuch intelligence. The character of the Henrietta as a sea-boat, and her very superior accommodation for passengers, makes her the most desirable vessel we know of for the duty she has tendered for ; and whatever view other settlements may take of the subject, we feel that the communication which it is' proposed to establish by means of this vessel, as far as we are concerned, will supply a great public want, which would be cheap at double the proposed cost.
