SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

Sir Henry and Lady Young returned on? Thursday evening, to Adelaide, after an excursion of sixteen days, extending northward as far as Charlton, the station of the Messrs. White, in the Mount Remarkable District, distant from Adelaide 160 miles. — South Australian Register, May 1. ,■ - , - ,A dep6t« for the reception of imports and exports, at the head of Spencer's Gulf-similar to that recently erected at Port Elliot, ha 3 been ' represented to the Governor to be necessary to 4 the recent northern settlers within 3(10 miles of Mount Remarkable, and will most probably be at once conceded by the Government. — Register.

Frauds op Bullion Merchants. — The Melbourne Argus accuses some of the~ jobbers there of wholesale fraud, and we are informed of a case in point. An Adelaide man, recently returned, belonging to a paity of five, who diivide'd their gold in Melbourne. The other four sold theirs in that city. They had each eight pounds* but on weighing his here, the Adelaide man finds his share, which was exactly the same as his partners', weighs nine pounds. — Adelaide Chronicle. A land sale was held at Adelaide on the 26th ult., of which the Register says : — The . attendance, including the Government, officers the intending purchasers, and " the audience," did not amount to half a score, and the echoing walls of the Supreme Court Hall were no longer chargeable with a single repetition of any sten- " torian bidding, for all the buyers had only two mild and gentlemanly representatives'- among them, and of competition there. was none. Whilst brooding over the "pitiful account," subjoined, there was some consolation, however, in the remembrance that the private sales of the Government during the past month amounted to some £719; as also in the assurance communicated by intelligent buyers, to the effect that the aggregate amount of the .like sales during - the present month, will be much more considerable. A suL sequent agreeable intimation from a successful gold-digger, in reference to Government land sales- infuturo, confirmed our impressions that, notwithstanding the present quietude, much of the Mount Alexander gold s will be. expended in the purchase, cultivation, and stocking of South Australian vales and uplands. ~ «,

Stranding of the "Washington." — The Washington, from Glasgow, 1500 tons burthen, unfortunately got ashore on Saturday evening last, at the entrance of the Gulf, supposed to be Troubridge Shoal. The unwelcome intelligence was brought to the consignees, Messrs. A. L. Elder & Co., on Sunday evening, by Mr. Davis, the late chief mate, and two of the passengers, and means were at once taken to render all the assistance possible, but up to the hour of our going to press, no' information as to the probable - fate of the vessel had been received. The cutter Breeze, the Government schooner Yatala, and the brig Louisa were all despatched early on Monday, but neither of them- had returned at a late hour last night. The Washington has ninety passenger? on board, and a very valuable cargo. It- was reported yesterday that she had been got off, and that she was coming into harbour, but it turned out ta be- the Martin Luther, from Melbourne. Whent she struck, she was going, we~heaf, at the rate of nine knots an hour, but the' weather has been, very favourable since, arid we are inclined ta hopS for the best. •
