We understand that sales of flour have been etrected this week by private contract at £8 : 10s. per ton ; the flour offered for sale at auction on Wednesday realized £9 : 10s. per ton. During the last three months flour m New Zealand, following the rise in the Sydney market, has commanded high prices, reaching at one. time to. iinwar.lc. .of x«3O per ton in Wellington. One of the first effects of the news of the Gold discoveries in New South Wales has been to cause large importations of South American flour into Sydney, in anticipation of the coming crowds of immigrants which it is supposed will be attracted from England and the European Continent to the Australian rival of California ; and these importations have completely overstocked the Sydney market. But though the price of flour has fallen so considerably the bakers still contrive to keep up the'price of the 21b. loaf, and while the 2lb. loaf was 6d. with flour at £3O per ton, now that flour has fallen to from £8 : 10s. to £9 per ton the 21b. loaf is still sd. The complaints on this subject are loud and very general; and unless the price of bread is speedily lowered it will have the effect of compellin o- families tn bake at home, and to adopt other means of making the price of bread bear a fair relation to the market price of flour.
