New Zealand Spectator, AND COOK’S STRAIT GUARDIAN. Saturday, December 6, 1851.
By the receipt of a Southern Cross we learn that the elections of the members of the Corporation of Auckland took place on the 1 Sth instant. The names of the different candidates will be found in our present number. In many of the Wards the candidates appear to have been returned without any opposition, and there seems to be an evident desire to give the measure a fair trial. Our contemporary shows some signs of disappointment at this result, but the Auckland settlers have taken a right view of the question, and if they use the new powers which have been conferred upon them in a judicious manner, they have the opportunity of promoting the interests of their town by the local improvements which the charter gives them the power of making, and of setting an example which the other settlements of New Zealand will do well to imi = tate.
