The Lucy Janies arrived on Monday after a quick passage from Kawhia. She brings intelligence of the loss of the Government schooner Maori, at Manukau, with a melancholy loss of three lives. This vessel, which was used as a passage boat in Manukau harbour, was running across from Onehunga to Waiuku on the 15th ult., when in beating down with a south-west wind she was suddenly struck by a heavy squall, and upset opposite the’spit running out from Mangere. Mr. Cooper and Mr. Kew, with the natives (twenty in number) who were passengers, succeeded in saving themselves by swimming ashore, but Captain Smale and his nephew, and Mr. Piers Gale, were unfortunately drowned. The survivors contrived to get to Mangere before the tide flowed, and, with the help of the natives, who rendered every assistance, eventually reached Onehunga. Captain Smale formerly commanded the Monarch on her voyage out to this port
