HUTT MEETING.

A meeting of the Hutt settlers was held at the Aglionby Arms on Tuesday, the 26th ult., to take into consideration the draft of a Charter of Incorporation for the Hutt district; the meeting was very numerously attended. A. Ludlam, Esq., was called upon to take the chair. It was moved by Mr. Recall, seconded by Mr. Milne— That his Excellency Sir George Grey be requested to confer upon the inhabitants of the Hutt a Charter of Municipal Corporation accoranig to the draft (as passed at this meeting) and to give a distinct pledge on the part of the Government that the Hutt settlers should not be called upon to tax themselves for the maintenance of the main road. The following amendment was proposed by Mr. M'Dowall— Thai the Hint settlers, in common with their fellow settlers throughout New Zealand, consi-. der that until there be constituted one truly general representative assembly for the whole colony, with a fair share in the power of control over the general revenue as well as municipal institutions, they should respectfully decline the responsibilities of an Incorporation which appears quite unlikely to enable them to fulfil safely and satisfactorily the necessary functions required over such an extensive and important civil jurisdiction. The Chairman having put the amendment, only seventeen hands were held up in its favour in a meeting of upwards of one hundred and fifty persons.
