New Zealand Spectator, AND COOK’S STRAIT GUARDIAN. Wednesday, July 30, 1851.
The report of the Legislative Council in our present number does not contain the whole of Saturday’s proceedings. After the committee on the New Zealand Company’s land claimants bill had adjourned, an address to her Majesty was, pursuant to notice, submitted by the Colonial Secretary of New | Munster to the Council for adoption, praying that one uniform system for the disposal of the waste lands of the Crown should be established in New Zealand, and pointing out in a temperate, clear, and forcible manner the evils the colony had suffered from a contrary course, particularly with reference to the transactions of the New Zealand Company. The motion for the adoption of
the address was seconded by the Attorney General of New Zealand in a long and masI terly speech in which he very ably reviewed the proceedings of the New Zealand Comj pany from its commencement to its close and pointed out the evil consequences re-
sulting to the colony by colonization through the agency of distant and irresponsible Companies. The learned member also included m his review the proceedings of the Canterbury Association, and referred to their I modest proposal (as contained in the correspondence between the Home Government and the Association) that all appointments to any Government office in the Canterbury Settlement, should be made at their recommendation or that of their Resident Agent. We intend printing a full report of the learned member’s speech in our next number. We shall also take an early opportunity of making a few remarks on the vote for an increased salary to the Lieutenant Governor of New Ulster.
On Monday the bodies that had been washed ashore from the wreck of the Barque Marta were buried. R. Cole, who went out to the spot for that purpose. Through the exertions of the np.ranna of Mr. Levin, Agent ofTh;;; s ;dZ d ’ra | direction, the body of Captain Plank was I brought into Wellington, and buried in the Cemetery on Monday,
