Diocese of Lyttelton.—At the recent conference between the Bishop of New Zealand and the Rev. Thomas Jackson, D.D., Bishop Designate of Lyttelton, it was agreed, that, subject to the approval of the Bishop of Sydney, as Metropolitan, the new diocese of Lyttelton shall consist of the Canterbury Settlement, and all that portion of the Middle Island of New Zealand, which is south of the 43rd degree of south latitude, the southern, or Stewart’s Island, the Chatham Islands, and the Auckland Islands. With respect to the consecration of the new bishop, the Bishop of Sydney, at the request of Dr. Jackson, has consented to forego, on this occasion, his acknowledged metropolitical right of consecrating bishops within his province, and the consecration will take place in Canterbury Cathedral, as the Archbishop and the Dean and Chapter are anxious thereby to make their

connexion with the new settlement that bears their name. The remaining portion of New Zealand, it is proposed, shall for the present remain in charge of Bishop Selwyn : but as soon as an increase of population, or other causes may render the appointment of another bishop advisable, it has been arranged that a further sub-division of it into two dioceses shall take place.—S. M, Herald.
