[From the Maitland Mercury.] | We are in receipt of Perth papers to the jth March. !The Colonial Secretary, Mr. Piesse, died n the 6th March, after an illness of two or hree weeks. Mr. Yule, formerly Acting Colonial Secretary, had again assumed the duties f the office. A deputation had had an interview with the governor to protest against the paying any Bonies from colonial funds towards maintainBritish convicts employed on public works. |iis Excellency explained that the only charge * n colonial funds yet incurred was about 2s. I J- per week for gratuities. The deputation listed that it was distinctly bargained for by Je colonists, when acceding to the offer of reaving convicts, that they should be employed n public works at the sole cost of the British Masury. one while lying at anchor at the latter place. Captain Charlesworth reports that he expects on his return voyage to bring a batch of convicts from Calcutta to this colony ; we suppose military convicts. We had much rather he would bring down a batch of invalids. The Royal Saxon was to sail yesterday.— Perth Gazette, Feb. 21.
The Revenue,—The revenue and expenditure returns for the quarter ending 31st December last, and published in the Government Gazette of the 4th inst., are most satisfactory, the revenue reaching £5,508 ss. lid., the expenditure £4,978 13s. 6d. — lb. Flour.—The tenders for thirty tons flour, received on Wednesday last by the Commissariat, were decided in favor of W. P. Clifton, Esq., whose offer to supply the same at the rate of £l6 per ton of 5,2401b5., without bags, was accepted.— lb.
