We find the information which we received on the subject of the remittance to Nelson of the £2OOO to be expended on the roads in that settlement (which appeared in our last number) to have been incorrect in some particulars. The facts of the case are, we learn, as follows : —The Government, under the impression that it might be a convenience to persons in business at Nelson, instructed Major Richmond to draw bills on the Treasury at Wellington of various amounts to suit the convenience of parties purchasing to the extent of £2OOO, (the sum to be advanced,) which bills were to be sold to those desirous of making remittances to Wellington. The present amount of paper currency in circulation at Nelson having been found inadequate to the wants of the settlement, a request had been made to the Manager of the Union Bank at Wellington to send over notes of that Bank to supply the deficiency which had been felt, but he had declined doing so, unless the applicants would take on themselves the risk of the remittance. Under these circumstances the Nelson Merchants had memorialized the Government to remit the £2OOO in notes of the Government Bank of Issue to remedy the want in that settlement of a sufficient paper currency.
