AGLION BY RACES.
The first day’s Races came off yesterday, and the weather proving favorable, a great number of persons assembled from all parts of the district. The road from Wellington was crowded with vehicles and equestrians at an early hour. The race, which created the greatest excitement and interest, was the Tradesmen’s Plate of fifty guineas, added to a handicap of four guineas each, for which the following horses were entered, and all started, with the exception of Scroggins:—Mr. St. Hill’s Pastile Bromley Mr. St. Hill’s Harribogine M‘lntosh Mr. Skipwith’s Ancient Mariner ..Rowatt
Mr. Armstrong’s Ringcreevy .... Owner Mr. Burcham’s Camilla Nicol!
Mr. Nairn’s Lapwing Collins Mr. J. M. Taylor’s Bullet Eye.. .. Ashmore Mr. Suisted’s Scroggins Camilla went off with the lead at a slashing pace, followed by Harribogine and Lapwing, in which manner they passed the winning-post the first time round; Harribogine and Camilla changed places in passing the second time, Lapwing still third; Pastile and Ancient Mariner who had been lying in the rear till now, began to let out, when the former soon passed them all and came in an easy winner; Harribogine and Ancient Mariner a dead heat for the second place ; the rest nowhere. Harribogine’s rider mistook the Judge’s Stand, and pulled up about 20 yards too soon, he would otherwise have made a very pretty race with Pastile, and been a good second. Pastile was in beautiful condition and appeared in better order than on any former occasion. Distance, 2 miles and a distance. Time 4min. 7sec.
The next race was for the Eretonga Stakes, for which the following horses were entered; Mr. St. Hill’s Aarriio^tne.... MTntosh 1 1 Mr. Jillett’s Donald Carr.... Rowatt 22 Mr. Armstrong’s Ringcreevy .. Owner Mr, Skipwith’s Ancient Mariner Ancient Mariner was withdrawn, and Ringcreevy pulled up the first time round ; the race was now between Harribogine and Donald Carr, the former winning both heats easily. Distance two miles. Time of the first heat, 3 min., 40 sec. The Hurdle Race, the Pitone and the Consolation Stakes, come off to-day, when we expect a livelier, if not a better, dav’s sport.
