HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

An Exhibition of this Society took place on Thursday at the Hall of the Wellington Athenaeum. This is the first occasion on which this building has been used for the purposes of the Horticultural Society, the former exhibitions having been held in the Britannia Saloon. The Institute is, in some respects perhaps, more convenient than the Saloon, but there is hardly sufficient light for displaying the objects exhibited to the greatest advantage. The exhibition for the time of the year was a very good one, its principal attraction consisting of flowers, of which there was a better display than might have been expected after the heavy rain of Wednesday. Among the novelties we noticed a fine orange and lemon from the Hon. H. Petre's garden at the Hutt, grown in a greenhouse, and some fine varieties of fuschias exhibited by Mr. Fox. The collection of bulbs was very good, and a magnificent bouquet contributed by Mr. St. Hill formed an important feature in the room from the judicious arrangement of the flowers and agreeable contrast of colours. By the kind permission of Col. Gold the Band of the 65th Regt. attended and contributed, by an excellent selection of music, to the afternoon's amusement. The following is a list of the prizes awarded : — Judges — Captain Barry, 65th Regt., Messrs. Moore and Macarthy. Vegetables. FIRST PRIZES.
