AUCKLAND.

The Schooner " Ilio-Mama." — The hull and materials of this beautiful but unfortunate vessel (valued, some three weeks eiuce, at £2,000 or £3,000) were brought to the hammer, in separate lots, by Messrs. Connell & Ridings, on Tuesday last. Th« attendance was numerous, but the biddings slack ; the hull, after one or two languid offers, being knotked down at £95, to our very able and efficient ship-builder, Mr. Nicol. We are extremely glad that the " IlioMama" has fallen into such skilful hands ; for we hope that Mr. Nicol will not only be able to turn her out ere long in all her pristine beauty, but that her lines will furnish him with suggestions for the construction of many a noble clipper of his own. If we carry on a provision trade with California, especially in such perishable commodities as potatoes, onions, carrots, and the like, we must have race, not cart horses for their conveyance ; and, should a passenger traffic (as is most likely) be maintained, there

can be 110 question that the preference will be given to the clipper that can shoot ahead in thirty, rather than to the drogger that may doze her fifty or sixty days over the same distance. — Southern Cross.
