It is stated that the deaths in Great BriUin from cholera amounted, within the last twenty-four days of which we have reports, to 5,358, out of 12,373 cases. In consequence of the prevalence of this disease in the metropolis, the Roman Catholic Bishop, Dr. Wiseman, had, " with the sanction and under the authority of the Pope," permitted the members of bis Cbtfrch to use animal food of all descriptions every day of the week. The Hon. and Rev. Baptist W. Noel had at length avowed the JEtap.tUt section of ,the Church as that to which be would attach himself. On the 9th of August, he was publicly re-baptized by immersion in John-street Chapel, Mecklenburgh Square, in the immediate vicinity of the Episcopal Church, in which he had for twenty-two years officiated as m clergyman of the Church of England. He. haduotyrt determined where his own place of worship should be. Lola Montes, (the ex-King of Bavaria* celebrated Countess of Laudsfelf), had again figured before the public in one of those scenes of mingled romance and profligacy by which her extraordinary career has been marked. She had inveigled into marriage Lieut. George T. Heald, of the 2ud Life Guards, (a relation of Mr. J. Heald, M.P. for Stockport,) a very young man, who had just come into the possession of a property of £7,000 or £8,000 per annum. On the 7'h of August, she was brought up at the Marl-borough-street Police Office, at the instance of Mr. Heald's aunt, on a charge of bigamy. It appeared lhat she had been married in 1837, in Ireland, to a Captain James of the 21st Bengal Native Foot, who is now in India wit If his regiment. She was divorced in 1842, but by the terms of the divorce was not allowed to marry again. After a lengthened inquiry, the magistiate adjourned the case, taking bail for the Countess's reappearance; but,' in the interval; she had escaped to^rf/e Mrs, Heal <l had been compelled to resign his commission. We- find it stated — but we know not with what claims to credence, — " The party of Sir R. Peel had been broken up ; the greater part had joined the-Whigs ; Mr. Gladstone would join the Tories." The long promised silver coin called a jlorin, value 25., had been issued in England. A step was thus taken towards the establishment of tbe much lauded decimal system. Her Majesty has granted to the University of London a new charter, which is likely to excite some interest. Th? council are erapowered to confer degrees on any who may have graduated at Oxford, Cambridge, or any other university in the kingdom ; they may also institute examinations for certificate! of proficiency on any subject connected with the arts and sciences. The number of candidates for ' matriculation this year was unusually large, amounting to 166. The ravages of cholera in some places continued to be fearful. In Wandsworth-road the mortality was very great. It still prevailed in Bristol, Southampton, and in Portsmouth. It was very fatal also in Dundee, in Scotland, where, out of 42 attacks, there were no less than 37 deaths. General total of a return on Monday, 13th August, 1047 cases, deaths 465. Mr. F. O'Connor was about to retire into private life, and Mr, J. O'Connell was about to commence practice at the Irish bar. ' The Grand Champion four-oared match, for £100, on the Thames, open to all the world, was won by the brothers Coombes, Thames watermen, assisted by the brothers Clasper, Newcastle watermen, beating Pocock, Newell, Doubledee, and M'Kinney, at the third heat by a length. It was tbe finest contest ever seen on the London water. There were crews from Oxford, Chelsea, Cambridge, Wandsworth, Durham, Eton, and other places. Trade in England was in a state of tbe bigbest prosperity.

Pensioners for Australia. — We understand it is the intention of tbt noble Lord at tbe bead of tbe Colonial Office, in conjunction with tht tiu Sacrttary at War, to an-

courage at much as possible the emigration of out-pensioners to the Colonies. It is proposed to send out a company of these men in charge of each convict ship that is to proceed to Australia, and arrangements are now being made for that purpose. The pensioners, on their arrival out, will be enrolled in a Local Force, and placed under the charge of the Staff Officer of Pensioners for the district in which the men are to reside. By this means a resident military force will be provided for each Colony. The wives and children of the pensioners selected will be sent out free after their husbands.-•lllustrated News, Aug 18.

Accident at the Britannia Bridge. — Bangor, Friday evening, Aug. 17. —A1l the fond and desired hopes of a successful realization of raising the monster tube of this stupendous bridge to its final resting place are for the next two months at least suspended. A few minutes before noon of this day, the lower part of the cylinder of the huge hydraulic press on the Anglesea side burst with a tremendous explosion, and in its descent on to the tube, a height of about eighty-four feet, fell with a terrific crash. The press was at work at the time, and had raised the tube about three feet duiing the lift of this day ; and had it not been for the very urgent and precautionary means adopted, by packing and bricking under with cement as the tube Mas being raised, the most dreadful consequences were inevitable. One of the workmen was precipitated from a rope ladder running from the top of the tube to the recess in which the hydraulic machine was fixed ; he was struck by the huge mass of iron in its descent, weighing nearly three tons, and now lies in a dreadfully crushed state. I greatly fear that he cannot survive many hours, as the medical attendant on the works considers that, on a close examination of his body, most of his limbs must be fractured, as well as suffering from dreadful internal contusions. Mr. Frank Foster, the resident engineer, with his staff, wers quickly on the spot, and I am happy to add (hat no other accident has happened. This most disastrous affair is to be attributed entirely to a defective coating ot the cylinder, and the raising of the tube will consequently be delayed some time, until the completion of the fixing of the new one in its place. The tube is now raised about 21 feet from the base. —Liverpool Journal.
