HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

Thb second exhibition, this season, of this Society took place yesterday at the Britannia Saloon, Lambton Quay. The weather proved unfavourable, as after a continuance of dry weather, the showers which fell on the night previous to, and during the morning of, the exhibition, spoilt many of the flowers in the different gardens, and had the effect of greatly reducing the number of exhibitors. In spite, howevei, of unpromising appearances, the exhibition was considered to be one of the best that had taken place ; the collection of flowers was exceedingly good, including some specimens of rare plants ; the collection of fruit also was very creditable to the settlement, including several competitors in each class,- and affording the best evidence of its increase,, and the care bestowed on its cultivation^ The quality of the fruit exhibited yesterday gave the best proof of the capabilities of this country for the successful cultivation of the different fruits grown in England, and in a few years time we doubt not they will be very abundant in the different gardens in this settlement. A very great improvement was made by the committee in the arrangement of the articles by the erection of stands, which allowed the flowers to be seen to the best advantage. A device exhibited by Mr. Taylor (a floral shield) .had a very pretty effect from the judicious contrast of colours of the different flowers, perhaps its designer intended by the emblem to offer a fair challenge to competitors to enter the lists, we hope the hint at all events will not be lost, and that the number of exhibitors will increase at each exhibition. An extra prize was also awarded to Mr. Ross for a glass of honey in the comb, with the bees at work in their chrystal prison. By^ Colonel Gold's kind permission the excellent Band of the 65th Regt. was in attendance, and greatly increased the attraction of the Exhibition by the performance of an excellent selection of music. -> - The following is the list of prizes awarded: — Judges — Messrs.
