NELSON. [From the Nelson Examiner, August, 11.]

Sporting. — The long-ta k«»d-of march, for £50, between Mr. Sihroder't. horse Patch, and Mr. Duppa's horse II Barbiere, was to come off ihjs afternoon, on the Nelso-i course, at three o'clock, but from some cause or other, Mr. Duppa failed to be at the post at that hour, when the owner of Patch insisted on Ms horse being started, which was done, and t lie stakes were claimed accordingly by him. Mr. Duppa arrived with his horse a few minutes after, atid disputed the race, which of course led to considerable di>cussion, but it was subsequently determined to reler the question to some competent authority, and another match was then made for £100, much to the satisfaction of.a very numeious body of spectators, who had began to fear that no rate would take place. On stripping, both hors°s sbowed in excellent condition, and II B»rbiere, on taking a pr-hmiuary canter, ran nearly half round the cour-e before his rider could check him, although we believe he has recently suffered from rheumatism in the shoulder, and was still a li.tle lame when brought out of the stable. The distance to be ran was two miles ; the toss for place was won by Patch, and both liorses went off well together. Patch soon however crept a little ahead, and on the fast round had ihe «dvantage of about two lengths. Ongoing down on the opposite side of the course le la^ time, II Barbiere's bottom began to tell, and his friends to entertain hopes that be might prove the winner. On coming to the distance-post, he was close on Patch's quarters, when there "ensued as fine a run-in as was ever -uil ness-ed. which teimmated by II Baibiere winning by a neck. Both horses were excellf-mly ridden ; II Barbiere by his owner, and Patch by Mr. H. Redwood. Time, 4 nun. 7 sec. Patch had been the favounte until within a few days of the race, but at starting the betting was even.
