Second Day. Hurdle Race Beaten Stakes.

Mr. J. Rhode's Forlorn Hope Mr. W. Flyger's Independent Mr. St. Hill's Mungamunga This race was very well contested. Forlorn Hope and Independent kept well together round the course, taking their leaps in capital style, at the last hurdle Independent leading by a length and a half jumped against the hurdle, broke it and fell across the course and Forlorn Hope fell over him, both horses and riders appearing to have a severe fall. Rowett remounted Independent and came in first, Forlorn Ho/ c was ridden in by Mr. Bennett, Mr. Rhodes having hardly recovered from his fall. In the two next heats Forlorn- Hope was ridden by Grimaldi, they were "capitally contested, and were both won by Forlorn Hope. The Cart-Horse Race afforded some capital sport ; nine horses started, and the race was won by Mr. Pringles Nominee, which was ridden by Rowett. ■■ The Maori Horse Race also created a -good deal of amusement, the riders possessing great confidence, and appearing to enter fully into the spirit of the race ; three horses started for this race. The Military Foot Race was won by Hargreaves of the 65th, M'Dermott coming in second. The Foot Hurdle Race was won by Rily, Valentine being second. The Foot Race for Civilians was won by Rankins, Kent coming in second. To these succeeded a Maori War Dance, and Rural Sports, which terminated the day's amusements. We regret to state that towards the close of the sports, a serious accident occurred to a private of the 65th, from a cart which was being dragged about the course by a number of persons, the wheel of which passed over his head, and injured him so seriously that he was taken to the hospital in a very precarious state.
