HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

On Wednesday evening the Annual Meetingof subscribers to the Horticultural Society was held at Barrett's Hotel, and, as it was previously rumoured that an attempt would, be made to disturb its proceedings by the introduction of political feeling, there was a more numerous attendance of subscribers than we remember on any former occasion,, the large room at Barrett's Hotel being quite full. We can only offer a brief outline of the proceedings of the evening, and it may be sufficient to observe that the opposition was of so personal a nature as to prove a complete failure. After the accounts of the previous year had been submitted by the Treasurer to the Meeting and passed, and the President, Vice Presidents, and Committee of Management for the ensuing'year had been elected, on Mr. Moore being proposed as Secretary, Mr. J. Wallace moved as an. amendment that Mr. R. J. Duncan be Secretary, which was seconded by Dr. Dorset, who imputed to the Secretary and Treasurer the failure of the last exhibition, which had in fact arisen from the unusual continuance of dry weather and other natural causes, and who appeared to forget the days of exhibition had been previously fixed by the subscribers themselves at the last Annual Meeting. On the amendment being put from. the chair, not one hand was held up in its favour, and Mr. Moore was unanimously elected Secretary. An attempt was then made by Mr. Wilkinson to charge Mr. Stokes with the exercise of an unfair influ--ence with the judges at some former exhibition, but this was' so satisfactorily refuted by Mr. Varnham, who had acted on several, occasions as judge, and who bore testimony to the impartial manner in. which the proceedings were always conducted that it was, deemed unworthy of further notice, and Mr., Stokes was unanimously elected Treasurer.. Jf experience avails anything we should imagine that the result of last Wednesday's meeting ought to be sufficient to convince the faction how they are daily sinking in public estimation ; if they had any regard for themselves, they would not make such frequent public exhibitions of their weakness. Dr. Dorset withdrew from the Committee, alleging that he had no wish to be ' connected with a falling cause, this ~W&$ - doubtless appear .to him a good reason^lfor ceasing to belting/to the Horticultural Society, to, us., it appears a still better reaion^

for his abandoning the course he has lately pursued. The following resolutions were passed unatVfrhously :—: — On the motion of Mr. Waitt, seconded by- Mr. Hunter, Mr. Ho it was lequested to take tlie chair. ,
