MECHANICS' INSTITUTE.

The following Rules of the Mechanics' Institute were, for want of room, omitted in the report of the General Meeting of its members, published in our last number :—: — , RULES. 1. That the Institute shall be named the Port Nicholson Mechanics' Institute. 2. The pbject of the Institute is to provide at a cheap rate instruction in science, arts, and literature, by means of a library, popular lectures, and classes for mutual instruction. 3. The affairs of the Institute shall be under the management of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary, with a Committee of twelve — to be elected at a general meeting-of the members, to be held on the first Monday of May and November in each year — eight of whom shall _be. .eligible for re- election. ~~r 4. Persons .desirous, of becoming members of the Institute, shall, " upon payment to the Treasurer of such sum as may" be appointed by the Institution from time to time, be enrolled in the .list of members. r , 5. The half-yearly payment of five shillings in advance onthe n ist of January 'and the Ist of July in- each year, shall entitle v-thev -the contributor to the benefit' of the Institute"; ~ to vote at the election of office-bearers; and to enjoy all the Cher privileges of membership. - ' 6. The Committee — any five of v whom shall form a quorum— shall meet on the first Tuesday of every month. They shall have power to sub-commit, make byelaws, and in general, do whatsoever they may think calculated to promote the interests of the Institute, - , - 7. That all byelaws made by the Committee, shall be submitted to the first general meeting thereafter for approval. f - 8. The President, whom failing, one of the Vice Presidents, or a member of the Committee shall preside at all the meetings of the Institution, when he- shall have casting vote only, and all matters brought before any meeting shall be decided on by a majority of the members present. ,^ 9. TheJTreasijrer shall keep regular and correct books, 'which shall be balanced and audited to the/satisfaction of the Committee down to the day; _ preceding the half-yearly meeting o£'tn< of the Institution. 10. The Treasurer shall lodge all monies collected by him belonging to the 'Institution sb soon as ; they- amount to five: pounds/ in the Savings Bank, and do monies shall be withdrawn, or, account paid, without a vote of the Committee. . 11.
