ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE. To the Editor of the New Zealand Spectator. Wellington, 28th November, 1848.

Sib, — On looking over a file of the NewZealander lately arrived, I was much surprised and vexed at a shameful and uncalled-for attack upon LieutenantGovernor Eyre, in the paper of the 18th instant. Speaking of his -despatch detailing the late heavy calamities with _yKhfch we were lately visited, the " irritable" and irritatittg editor says, " Those disasters have filled the mind of the Lieutenant Governor with maudlin terror, and guided his pen with drivelling prognostications of desolation and doom," &c. Sir, will you tell your brother editor that our Lieutenant-Governor does not deserve this at his hands. In the time of our calamity no one was more active in endeavours to provide shelter for the houseless, in comforting and encouraging the sufferers, and in recognizing the hand of the Almighty, and exhorting all to confidence in Divine goodness 1 and mercy. In his despatch his Excellency spake the prevailing sentiments of the community. The editor of the New Zealander may say "Fudge" if he pleases, to the despatch ; but possibly had he been present with us, even his lion heart would have quailed before the desolating judgments of the Almighty. S. I.
