[From the Government Gazette, Not. 20.]
Colonial Secretary's Office, Wellington, 1 7th November, 1848. HIS EXCELLENCY THE LIEUTE-NANT-GOVERNOR has much gratification in directing that the* following correspondence, relatiTe to the satisfactory conclusion of an arrangement between the Principal Agent of the New Zealand Company and the Resident Land Purchasers, be published for general information. By his Excellency's Command, Alfred Domett, Colonial Secretary.
Wellington, 15th November, 1848. Sib, — I have the honor to enclose a copy of a letter which was addressed by some of the Resident Land Purchasers in this settlement to the late Principal Agent of the New Zealand Company, and which has since received the signatures of nearly the whole of that class of colonists. The document was, I understand, communicated to the late Principal Agent before his death, but its de- ; livery at the Company's office has been delayed in consequence of several of the parties who tiave signed it having to be communi- j cated with at a' distance. ! ' I am. informed that it was the intention of His Excellency the Governor- in- Chief to direct the publication of this document in | the Government Gazette of this Province. I have no doubt that such a course would operate beneficially on the interests of this settlement, and, indeed, of the colony at large, as the letter affords the most satisfactory proof of the amicable and complete adjustment of all differences between the New Zealand Company and those who have purchased land from it in the settlement, and is evidence of the restoration of that harmony between the Company and the Settlers under its auspices, without which the prosperity of the colony must have been greatly retarded, and by which its interests cannot fail to be materially promoted in various particulars of the most vital importance. Having no doubt that the Government of this Province will coincide in this view, I have the honor to request that the letter referred to- may be inserted in the next Government Gazette. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient Servant, William For, Acting Principal Agent of the New Zealand Company. To the Honble. the Colonial Secretary of New Munster.
