WAKEFIELD MONUMENT.
AT a Meeting held at the Aurora Tavern, on Saturday, the 30th of September, 1848, The Hon. H. W. Petre in the Chair, The following resolutions were carried unanimously :—: — It was proposed by Dr. Featherston, seconded by A. M'Donald, Esq., J.P.— That the friends of the late Colonel Wakefield being desirous to erect a Monument to his memory, a Committee be appointed to collect subscriptions, and that such Committee consist of — The Honorable H. W. Petre, Col. Treat. - H. St. Hill, Esq., R.M. A. Domett, Esq., Col. Sec. A. M'Donald, Esq., J P. Dr. Featherston W. Hickson, Esq., J.P. Mr. Justice Chapman W. Fox, Esq., J.P. J. Kelham, Esq., J.P. Major Baker, J P. A. Ludlam, Esq , J.P. W. Fitzherbert, Esq., J.P. Dr. Dorset W. Lyon, Esq. Proposed by H. St. Hill, Esq., R.M., and seconded by Major Baker, J.P. — That the subscriptions be limited to one guinea. Proposed by J. Kelham, Esq., J.P., seconded by A. Ludlam, Esq., J.P. — That an account be opened with the Union Bank of Australia, under the head of the Wakefield Monument, and that A. M'Donald, Esq., J.P., be requested to act as Treasurer. Proposed by A. Domett, Esq., Col. Sec, seconded by W. Lyon, Esq. — That Major Baker, J.P., be requested to act as Secretary, and to communicate with the other settlements, inviting their co-operation in the objects of the present meeting. Proposed by W. Fox, Esq., J.P., seconded by Dr. Featherston — That (the New Zealand Company having devoted a sum of j£3oo, accruing by the non-fulfilment of the terms of the charter party of one of the Nelson immigration vesse's, towards the erection of a Monument in the Nelson settlement to the memory of the sufferers in the Wsirau massacre) the present appears a proper occasion to revive the subject in the Colony? and that the Committee above elected be also the Wellington Committee for that purpose, and for taking the necessary steps to procure further subscriptions. STRAYED.
A WHITE, HORNED HEIFER about two years old, heavy in calf, has been grazing for the" last two months on the grounds of the Undersigned, at Kai Warra. Jf not claimed on or before the 20th inst., she will be sold to defray the expences. . Hugh Cameron. Kai Warra, October 4, 1848.
