Prevailing Winms, Currents, &c. — In the month of January, 1847, a number of casks of tallow and sperm oil were Washed on shore near Wangape, about 12 or 15 miles north of Hokianga, on the west coast of New Zealind, and from the description given by the natives, there is no doubt they are part of the cargo of the barque Alary, which vessel was wrecked on Endeavour Reef, Bass's Straits, in the early part of 1846 Tne distance these casks drifted in about twelve months is 1300 miles in a northwest direction, thus show-, ing that the prevailing winds, current, and swell had sent them to the eastward at the rate of about three miles and a-half per 'day. Numerous instances of this kind are on record ; part of the' cargo of the ship that was lost on King's Island, about eight years ago. was picked up on the coast ■ near the' North Cape; also a puncheon of rum, and two quarter-casks of port wine perfectly sound, washed on shore near Kaiptra,, supposed to come from the ship lost about the same time in D'Entrecasteaux Channel. I have now a piece'of ' the tallow in my possession, perfectly sweet and sound ; the natives describe the casks to be covered all over like grease, and barnacles to such an extent that they are obliged to chop them off before they can tell what the. package is like. — Commun-icated-by, Captain Wing, brig Lady Mary Pelhqm. — Cornwall Chronicle, Julj 1.
