New Zealand Spectator, AND COOK'S STRAIT GUARDIAN. Wednesday, July 19, 1848.

We this day publish a further list of subscriptions in aid of repairing the road along Lambton Quay. The contributions, in money or moneys worth, altogether amount to the sum of £108 : .14. If to this be added the sum to be contributed by the Government, the funds at present available for this improvement are £217. A meeting of the Subscribers will be held on Monday next for the' purpose of making the necessary arrangements for collecting the subscriptions and adopting such plans as will ensure the money being laid out to the best advantage. An opportunity now occurs of making one of the most important improvements yet "attempted in the town, it will rest with the Subscribers to adopt such measures as will effectually secure the attainment of this end. It must not be supposed, however, that because arrangements are making for beginning this improvement, that the subscription list is closed ; on the contrary, from various causes we are satisfied that many persons who may feel inclined to subscribe have not yet been solicited ; many — prudent persons — are waiting until they see a good beginning is made before they add their contributions. As the work advances, we hope it will be conducted in such a manner as to insure a liberal increase of subscriptions, and we beg those who have not subscribed to remember that an equal amount to their contributions will be added by the Government. Of the absentees owning sections on Lambton Quay, only one has contributed towards this improvement. The agents of the others feel themselves authorised to receive the rents, but not to promote improvements which tend to increase the value of their property. Neither have the Model Company contributed anything, though they are ordinarily full of promises and professions, and will no doubt be ready to claim credit for any improvement in the state of the colony, as effected by their agency. The whole amount of subscriptions, with very trifling exceptions, has been contributed by the settlers. We may point in the present list to a contribution which we hope may have many imitators ; we allude to the brick drains contributed by Messrs. Fitzherbert and Plimmer. One of the principal causes of the present wretched state of the road along the beach ( is the want of sufficient drainage; the wooden drains constructed across the roads soon fall into decay, and break up the road, leaving holes which make it dangerous ; of this examples may be , seen in Lambton Quay and Willis Street ; and the constant repairs required, in the end prove then? to 1 be expensive and not economical substitutes for good brick drains. What is to be done now, ought to be done substantially ; we have already suffered enough from the effects of the former makeshift system.

We have received by late arrivals Nelson Examine! sto the Bth inst. A public meeting respecting the state of the roads in the settlement was held on the 4th inst,, at which a memorial to the Governor-in-Chief was adopted, praying for pecuniary assistance for their repair. A mare, of the value of £40 was presented by the working classes of Nelson, and a bridle and saddle by the ladies, to Mr. Elliott, the editor of the Nelson Ezaminer, as a testimony of their esteem.

The Brightman, with a cargo of stock, arrived from Sydney on Monday after a tedious passage of thirty days. She brings no later news than has been received by previous arrivals.

Michael Peel, who was apprehended in May last at the Muka-muka rocks on .a warrant of the Resident Magistrate at Akaroa on a charge of robbing the store of Mr. Greenwood, in that district, was discharged on Saturday by his Honor Mr. Justice Chapman on a writ of Habeas Carpus. In our account of his apprehension we confounded this charge with a previous robbery at Mr. Greenwood's station, at Port Cooper, with which Peel was in no way concerned. ':
