SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
Notice is givea by the Police Commissioners, pursuant to the ordinance, No. 15, 1846, intituled, "an ordinance to authorise the levying an assessment in aid of the expense of repairing the streets within the city of Adelaide," that an assessment has been made and allowed upon all houses, lands, aud tenements, within the police limits of the cily of Adelaide, for the six months ending the 31st day of March, 1848, and that a rate of sixpence in the pound upon the nett annual value of the several hered taments assessed as aforesaid will be forthwith levied and raised for the ■ purpose contemplated in the said Act. A memorial, most respectably signed, is about to be presented to the Governor, prayng his Excellency to abolish t e Act cf Council which does away with imprisonment for debt, for any sum under £20. Captain Sturt. — There have been various rumours that the above gentleman has been appointed Governor of the new Province of Victoria (Port Phillip). This cannot be true, as be has written to a friend in Adelaide, that he is coming back to bis old post, not having been able to get any better appointment. — South Australian.
