New Zealand Spectator, AND COOK'S STRAIT GUARDIAN. Saturday, July 8, 1848.
We have omitted our usual editorial remarks, in order to leave as much room as possible 'for extracts from English papers, of news connected with the recent revolution in .France, and the state of the European Con- , tinent. • • - ~ ' , - i
The sum of fifty'pounds has been paicf into" the Wellington Savings Bank by the natives v 'of Wanganui, as part of a fund for building a mill in that district for grinding their wheat. We understand also that a considerable portion of the money received by them as the compensation for their land has been spent in horses and cows.
Rangihaeata. — Last Sunday week (the 2d ihsfc.), a house belonging to Dr. Best at Rangitikei, in the occupation of Dr. Chamberlain, was burnt down by Rangihaeata and his followers. No violence was offered jto Dr. Chamberlain, and the property in the house, was first deliberately removed, some of Rangihaeata's followers assisting, in itsremoval; the house was then set fire to, and burnt to the ground. The Ngatiapas, the resident natives of the district, have recently offered Rangjtikei to the Government for sale, and .this- outrage appears to have been committed by Rangihaeata to prevent any settlers from establishing cattle stations in that district, and. with the view of forcing the Ngatiapas (in the event of its sale), to acknowledge, his superior claims. We understand that Te Rauparaha has also given Mr. Skipwith notice to leave Otaki.
