Subscriptions in aid of repairing the public thoroughfare along Lambton Quay, Wellington :—: —
Mechanics' INBTiTUT«.^-It gives us pleasure to hear that an effort is being made to revive the Mechanics' Institute in this place. It has long been a reproach to this settlement, that while it was the first ta set the example in the establishment of such institutions in New Zealand/ the institution 'here has been so long allowed td lie dormant! In the mean time the books, which were stored in the offices of the New, Zealand Company,
have suffered considerably from damp, and it therefore became necessary to do something to save them from farther injury. A small house has now been taken near Government house. by a few of the former members, and as soon, as some alterations have been made in the house — which was till lately the office of Col. M'Cleverty— all those disposed to become members will be requested to meet there, and we hope the Institute will " go on and prosper."
