LATEST ENGLISH NEWS. [ From the Straits Times, Feb. B.]
The following were the principal items of news from November 24th to December 24th. The following failures are announced :—: — Messrs. J. and H. Reay ; Thompson & Co., Liverpool ; Secretan & Capper ; Tanner and Ward ; Mr. Ashbumer, Liverpool ; Messrs. Carr & Co., Newcastle on Tyne ; Walker & Co., of Leeds ; A. &J. Downie, of Glasgow: Sargant, Goddard & Co. ; T. & J.* Sands, of Liverpool. The Duke of Wellington has recommended England to be prepared for a war with'Frahce In prance, Prince Joinville has resigned
the post of Admiral of the Mediterranean fleet on account of ill health. There is no longer a Switzerland — 13 cantons have been dissevered from theothef seven. Friburg is fallen — Zug is subdued — Lucerne is occupied. The Bank of England has reduced the rate of interest to six per cent. Messrs. Fletcher, Alexander, and Co. have been assisted by £300,000 from the Bank of England. The India and China mail for November, reached London December 20th. A revolution has broken out in Greece ; there had been much hard fighting at Patras — the Governor was a prisoner in the hands of the insurgents. Parliament has been adjourned to February 3rd. The remark as to the preparation for war arises, we apprehend, from a letter written by the Duke of Wellington, in which he points out how unprotecied some parts of the coast of England are, and how necessary it is that England should be prepared for war.
