New Zealand Spectator, AND COOK'S STRAIT GUARDIAN. Saturday, March 11, 1848.

By the Calypso which arrived on Thursday, we have received Sydney papers to the 22nd February, containing English news to the 10th November, by the Hyderabad, an Emigrant vessel, which had made a quick passage of ninety-six days. The failures among the commercial houses had increased, and the monetary crisis had been so severe, that the British Government had authorised a relaxation of the Bank charter act, allowing the Bank Directors in the present emergency to enlarge the amount of their discounts and avlvances upon authorised security, charging a higher rate of interest, and had promised on the meeting of Parliament to propose a bill of indemnity. The Bank Directors had acceded to the recommendation, and had advanced the rate of discount on three months bills to 8 per cent. The effect of this announcement was to cause a rise in the funds, the price of consols November 9th, being 84^. Parliament was to meet on the 18th November. There is not much news relating to New Zealand. The Ann sailed from Deal for New Zealand the Bth, and the Indian was to sail from Gravesend the 17th October. The two vessels for Otakou were to sail the middle of November. From an article in the Dailj News on New Zealand affairs, which we have reprinted, it would appear that the intelligence of the disturbances at Wanganui had reached England.

Dbjbune at Lyall's Bay. — On Thursday the whole of the 65th regiment stationed in Wellington marched out to Lyall's Bay for the purpose of having ball practice ; and the. oppprtunity was taken by Col. Gold and the Officers of the regiment to invite their friends and acquaintance to a dejcuni. The day proved remarkably fine ; and the

guests approached the appointed place of rendezvous, which was on the west sfde of Lyall's Bay, some on horseback, others in vehicles, while many preferred walking.^ The targets were placed at a distance of.80 yards, and there was some excellent practice, many of the shots hitting the .innermost ring, and not a few piercing the bull's eye., A very elegant entertainment was provided by Col. Gold and the Officers for their guests, the band of the regiment adding to the day's amusements by playing & variety of favourite airs. Towards the evening the party broke up and returned to town, highly pleased with their day's excursion, and with the attention and courtesy of their gallant entertainers.

Coronek's Inqukst. — An inquest was held on Wednesday, at Mr. Burcham's, River Hutt, before Dr. Fitzgerald, Coroner, on the body of Joseph Udy, a child aged two years and four months, who was found drowned in the Awa Moutu, or third river, the previous day. The deceased, it is supposed, had been playing by the side of the river, and falling in, had been drowned. On being missed from home, search was made for him, when his body was found in the water. Verdict, accidentally drowned.
