MEETING OF LAND PURCHASERS FROM THE NEW ZEALAND COMPANY.
A meeting of the Land Purchasers from the New Zealand Company was held at Mr. R. Davis's Commercial Room, for the purpose of hearing Mr. Commissioner Cowell's Report upon the Land Purchasers' Letter. Capt. Daniell in the chair. Present — Capt. Sharp, Major Hornbrook, Messrs. Clifford, Scott, Monteith. Lyon, Boddington, Fitzherbert, Stokes, Featherston, Logan, Brandon, Moore, Shand, Northwood, Hunter, Bradey, Hort, Deighton, Baker, Bethune, Catchpool, Harrison, Hart and others. Mr. Hickson, who was prevented by indisposition from attending the meeting, had applied to His Excellency the LieutenantGovernor for a copy of Col. Wakefield's letter alluded to in Mr. Cowell's Report, but was informed that he was unable to furnish him with the desired information. The following resolutions were carried unanimously,:-^ Moved by Dr. Featherston, seconded by Mr. Boddington — That this Meeting having heard read Mr. Cowell's report, feel it incumbent upon them at once to express their surprise and indignation that Mr. Cowell should, on the exceedingly questionable authority of Colonel Wakefield and Mr. E. J. Wakefield, have dared to throw doubts upon ihe veracity and good faith of the Land Purchasers whose names are ap- ' pended to the letter, and that a Committee consisting of Mr. Hickson, Mr. Fitzherbert, Capt. Daniell, Mr. Clifford, Mr. Brandon, Mr. Hart, Mr. Hort, and Dr. Featherston, be appointed to 1 prepare resolutions (to be submitted to an adjourned meeting) preparatory to an answer being written to Mr. Cowell's report, and with a view to the framing of Petitions to Parliament, &c. Moved by Mr. Clifford, seconded by Mr. Motfre-^ '^ J •Tliat'a Subscription be entered into for defraying the printing and' other expenses attendant on the measures requisite to be undertaken to give a full and complete refutation to the unfounded calumnies made by Mr. Com-
missioner Cowell against the gentlemen signing the letter from the Land Purchasers to the New Zealand Company,_and that Mr. Lyon be requested to act as Treasurer. We believe it is intended to .print Mr. Cowell's report and the refutation to it in the form of a pamphlet for general circulation. We shall take an early opportunity of noticing the Commissioner's Report,
