New Zealand Spectator, AND COOK'S STRAIT GUARDIAN. Wednesday, January 26, 1848.

By the Columbine which arrived yesterday from Sydney, after a passage of seventeen days, we have received our usual files of Sydney papers to the 7th instant, containing English news to the 7th September, extracts from which will be found in our columns. The Columbine brings the September mail which arrived at Sydney on the 2nd of January.

It is to-day our truly painful and melancholy duty to announce the death on Sunday morning last of Charles Cator, Esq., solicitor of this town. The deceased gentleman was attacked about three weeks ago with the prevailing Influenza, which, thinking it of little consequence, he had neglected, instead of having recourse to medical advice, On the Monday previous to his lamented death, however, inflammation of the lungs ensued, which not all the skill and unremitting attention of his medical advisers (Drs. Dorset and Featherston) could subdue, and which soon proved fatal. His friends in England will however have the melancholy satisfaction of knowing that no means were left untried that human aid could suggest to save him. Though Mr. Cator had only resided amongst us about two years bis amiable upright conduct had most deservedly earned for him the respect and esteem of all classes of our small community, in which this sad event has caused a general gloom. Whether we consider him in private life or in his professional business, his lamented death has caused a void which will not be speedily filled up. The funeral takesplace this morning, which the very numerous friends of the deceased will of course attend to show the last mark of respect that can be paid to him.
