HIS EXCELLENCY THE LIEUTE-NANT-GOVERNOR has been pleased to direct the publication of the following extract from a Despatch from his Excellency the Governor-h>Chief, for general information. By his Excellency's command, S. E. Grim stone, Acting Secretary.

(Extract from a Despatch, dated Auckland, 19th November, 1847, from his Excellency Governor Grey, to Lieutenant- Governor Eyre,) " I have the honor to acquaint your Excel- . lency that it is my intention, in pursuance of the powers imposed upon me by the 25th chap, of the-reeent New Zealand Charter, to issue a Proclamation bringing that Charter into operation within the islands of New Zealand, from •and after the Ist day of January, 1848. " The departure of the Racehorse has been so sudden that a copy of the Proclamation, could not be prepared in time to be sent down' by that vessel. (Signed) " G. Grey."
